After breakfast excursion to Sigiriya.

169 kms from Colombo and The spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya is an impregnable fortress, a monastic retreat, and a rock art gallery. Built in the 5th century AD by king Kasyapa in the 5th century A.D to fend of a feared invasion, it is situated atop a towering 200m (656ft) high rock.

In a sheltered pocket, approached by a spiral stairway, are the famous frescoes, 5th century rock paintings of damsels These frescoes which have withstood the elements for 15 centuries are probably the finest examples in the world. Stone steps lead to the flat top with an area of nearly one hectare where the palace - the outer wall of which was built on the very brink of the precipice - courtyards, and even a complicated drainage system were constructed. Sigiriya was a royal citadel for more than 18 years. The summit of the rock offers spectacular views. The UNESCO - sponsored Central Cultural Fund has restored Sigiriya's 5th century Water Gardens to their former glory. Here on the gallery walls are the famous Sigiriya frescoes. These frescoes which have withstood the elements for 15 centuries are probably the finest examples in the world.

P.M. excursion to Polonnaruwa.

Polonnaruwa is located 216 kms from Colombo and 75 kms South East of Anuradhapura. The ancient lakeside Sacred City of Polonnaruwa was once the medieval Capital of Sri Lanka from 11 – 12 century AD. Polonnaurwa rose to fame after the decline of Anuradhapura.

Here too, are the ruins of ancient Sinhala civilisation - giant statues and dagobas, built by the kings of Sri Lanka. The remains date mostly from the reign of the Indian Chola dynasty in the 11th and 12th century. They cover a more compact site than at Anuradhapura and are in an excellent state of repair. Ancient ruins of King's council chamber, the Royal Citadel, the Kumara Pokuna, Royal Pavilion, the Vatadage Relic House lavished with moonstones, guardstones and sculptured railing, temple houses, rock cut statues, a vast manmade lake are some of the memorable sights. The largest of the man made reservoirs, the huge Parakrama Samudra, is larger in size than the Colombo harbour.

Sri Lanka has many varied sites of historical and cultural importance. While the ruins of the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa have a grandeur that is hard to surpass, there are lesser-known sites with an ambience all of their own.
